UP Health System is pleased to welcome husband-and-wife respirology duo Matthew Karulf, MD, and Marykay Lehman, MD, to the respiratory medicine team.
Both Dr. Karulf and Dr. Lehman provide comprehensive consultation, diagnosis, and treatment for diseases of the lungs and respiratory system, such as asthma and COPD, and offer lung function testing and blood pressure interpretation. chest imaging, among other services.
Board certified in Respirology, Critical Care, and Internal Medicine, Dr. Karulf attended medical school at the University of Colorado in Denver, CO.
During his post-graduate training, he completed his residency in internal medicine at Abbott Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis, MN – where he spent time as chief resident – and his fellowship in pulmonary medicine and in critical care at Oregon Health & Science University in Portland, OR.
Most recently, he served as an attending pulmonary and critical care physician at Spectrum Health in Grand Rapids, MI, where he actively managed patient care in the Cardiothoracic Intensive Care Unit and provided consultation and inpatient care/ outpatients with lung disease.
“With over 20 years of experience in the field, I am honored to bring respirology and critical care services to Upper Peninsula (UP) residents,” said Dr. Karulf. “As a physician, I am passionate about providing quality care and building trusting relationships with my patients and the medical community around me.”
Dr. Karulf also specializes in interstitial lung disease and the evaluation of thoracic nodules, masses, and tumors, and has experience in advanced bronchoscopy techniques, including navigational bronchoscopy, endobronchial ultrasound, and thoracentesis.
Board certified in Respirology and Internal Medicine, Dr. Lehman completed medical school at Michigan State University College of Human Medicine in East Lansing, MI, and later completed residency training in Internal Medicine at Abbott Northwestern. Hospital. She completed her fellowship in Pulmonary Medicine at Oregon Health and Science University, where she received several teaching awards from her medical residents.
After his postgraduate training, Dr. Lehman spent most of his career as a pulmonary medicine physician at Spectrum Health Medical Group in Grand Rapids, MI. During this time, she was a consultant in lung disease and had a keen interest in cystic fibrosis in adults; she has served as physician in charge of the Cystic Fibrosis Transitional Clinic, Associate Director of the Adult Cystic Fibrosis Clinic, and has conducted clinical research trials in cystic fibrosis.
“I was a student in the Michigan State University College of Human Medicine’s UP program and received an excellent education during my time here,” Dr. Lehman said. “When the opportunity arose to come back and join UP Health System, I didn’t hesitate. It is an honor for me to provide pulmonary care to UP residents, and I look forward to building relationships with my patients and their families for years to come.
